10 Things to Ponder before Installing a Pool
10 Things to Ponder before Installing a Pool
1. What are the zoning laws in your area? Do not start any work - or even get a consult- without making sure you are following the zoning ordinances for pools. Every city is different but typically the rules are strict so make sure you know what you are dealing with.
2. Figure out what type of pool you want. Pool types can be concrete, vinyl -lined, or fiberglass. Your pool contractor should walk you through the steps and you should feel like you are informed and comfortable at every step.
3. Make sure you are getting a solid product that will stand the test of time. Liner pools and Fiberglass inserts are quicker to install but will they last? Concrete will take longer but will last longer also so the increased cost may be worth it.
4. Research and be in the “know” about the latest technologies related to aquatics for energy efficiency, automation, and heating. Your pool contractor should help you find a reliable, high-efficiency system that fits your needs.
5. Are you going to maintain the pool yourself? If not, who are you going to use?A quality pool maintenance company will be worth its weight in gold over the long run. Having a gorgeous sparkling blue pool is a wonderful selling feature. Having a sketchy green bog in the backyard…not so much!
6. The pool is not the only thing to consider! You need a pool deck, lighting, hardscaping and an overall ambient environment when you are done building. These things will increase your budget and you can’t add them later so it is important to identify your needs and price them out upfront.
7. Are you going to landscape your pool and your backyard? If so you need to design a manageable landscape plan that will enhance the pool or even add to the beauty of the outdoor space.
8. All things considered, determine your budget and talk with your Realtor and financial advisor about the costs and benefits of adding a pool to your property.
9. Once you have checked off the last 8 items you are ready to start making contact with pool companies. In order to make a deal work, some contractors may not include everything in their initial bid, which is why knowing EXACTLY what you want is critical in getting an accurate bid for the job with no surprises later.
10. It is absolutely critical to hire a licensed, bonded, insured and reputable pool company. It can be catastrophic financially to hire a bad contractor. Do your own due diligence and check out anyone you hire to build the pool of your dreams.
