Valentine's Day Love Story
Happy Valentine’s Day. I thought I would share a little bit about myself and my Husband John. We met as teenagers in summer camp. We had total puppy love. Since this was the era before the internet and cell phones, we wrote each other letters after we left camp. I saved those letters, they are so sweet and sappy to read now. John would send me mixed tapes too. If you are not familiar with the ancient art of mixed tapes, the mixed tape was a copy of your favorite songs dubbed onto a tape that was made on your boom box!
We kept in touch all through the beginning of high school and would talk on the phone for hours and hours but the long distance finally took its toll and we drifted apart toward the end of high school. In college we ran into each other once when I traveled to AZ for a concert and we connected again. It was nice to connect and have fun together but no big sparks were flying at that time but we enjoyed each other as friends.
As the 90’s were winding down, I was finishing Graduate school at American University preparing to submit my Senior Thesis, and my apartment was broken into and my laptop and some things were stolen. The laptop had the only copy of the thesis inside the computer on a floppy disc. I had to write the entire thesis over again. It was a pivotal moment in my life, and after the break-in I decided to “clean house” in my apartment and get rid of a bunch of things I had been pack ratting around with me. One of those things was John’s football jersey from highschool. I sent it back to the only address I knew, which was his parent’s home in Tucson. As luck or the fates would have it he called to thank me for sending back his jersey and we reconnected again. This time, sparks did start to fly.
We took a “friend” trip to Alaska to visit a friend of his and we had the most amazing time seeing whales, eagles, bears and we took a seaplane to Baranoff Island to visit some hot springs. Totally magical. By the end of that trip we were officially a couple and the rest they say is history. We got married in 2005, and started our family in 2008. Knocking it out of the park with twins that were totally unexpected! We must have been together in a past life, who knows, but we definitely have been the witness to each other's lives as we have grown into adults. We definitely have a special relationship and one that many are not lucky to find. I love my childhood sweetheart very much. Marriage is not any easier despite our long time together but we are committed to one another for a lifetime of love and friendship.
